Title: “Meeting the challenges and grasping the opportunities”

In his talk, Mike will emphasis the importance of innovation to business success and as an economic driver. He will set out the Government’s vision to make the UK a leader for science, research and innovation and the Government’s role in creating the conditions for businesses to succeed. Mike will also discuss the exciting opportunities arising from new technological developments and the importance of innovation in addressing challenges like climate change. Finally, Mike will explore the opportunities and threats presented by globalization particularly from the emerging economies

About the Speaker:
Mike joined the Patent Office, now called the UK-Intellectual Property Office, in 1990 when it relocated to South Wales from London. Before joining the Office Mike worked in various parts of the DTI (now BERR), including the Telecommunications Directorate where he was involved in developing the legal framework for the emerging mobile telephone and satellite broadcasting industries

Since joining the Office, Mike has worked in a number of areas of the Patents Directorate, including the Legal Section where among other things his duties involved drafting new patent legislation, representing the Office in international forums and acting as a Hearing Officer as part of the Office’s tribunal function. In October 2006 Mike was asked to set up the Office’s new Innovation Directorate and to join the Office’s Board of Directors.
